Can you stay fewer than 7 nights at a Marriott Vacation Club resort?

For guests who want a few nights at a Marriott Vacation Club resort rather than a full week: yes, outside the busiest weeks of the year, and with enough notice, we can book 4 nights or more with a flexible check-in day, because we reserve with owners’ points instead of a fixed week. In the peak weeks the resorts run 7 nights, weekend to weekend, and nobody can shorten that. Tell your scowt the dates and we will check availability.

I have worked with the Marriott points system nearly every day for years, first as a Marriott salesman and since 2012 booking with owners’ points for the clients of Travelscowt, so what follows is the mechanics as I know them from the inside (with the usual disclosure that I am a former Marriott salesman who now rents these villas for a living).

Why is a Marriott week always a week?

The original Marriott Vacation Club product was a deeded week: a 7-night stay at one resort, in one season, running weekend to weekend. Many owners still hold their vacations that way, and an owner who rents out his own week can only hand you that week, from his check-in day to his check-out day. Ask him for a Tuesday to Saturday and he has nothing to offer you, however much he would like to.

So where do the short stays come from?

Points. In 2010 Marriott folded its clubs into one points program, and the older week owners can enroll their weeks so they trade them for points as well. Points book by the night, not by the week, and that is the whole trick: a 4-night stay from a Tuesday, a 5-night stay from a Sunday, or a long weekend in the shoulder season all become possible when the reservation is made with points rather than a deeded week. Travelscowt books with the points of the owners we work with, which is why we can offer stays that a week-owner, or a rental company that only lists weeks, cannot.

What are the rules, exactly?

Marriott opens its reservation windows in steps, and what an owner can hold depends on his level in the club. Owners at the Executive level and above, which is most of them, can reserve any number of nights from 13 months before check-in; owners at the two entry levels can hold full weeks at 13 and 12 months but stays shorter than 7 nights only from 10 months out (I go into the levels, the windows and the waitlist in my owners’ guide to the Abound program, and I will spare you the rest of it here). What that means for you is simple enough: a short stay in a quiet month is usually easy, a short stay in a busy month depends on what the owners have left after the week bookings, and the earlier you ask, the more I can do.

Two more things I have learned the hard way. Weekday nights (Sunday through Thursday) take fewer of an owner’s points than weekend nights at most resorts, so a Monday to Friday is often easier to find than a Thursday to Monday, and a place like Las Vegas, where 3 or 4 nights is the whole trip for most people, suits a points stay especially well. And because every stay we book with points is subject to availability until the owner’s reservation is made, I will never tell you a short stay is yours until it is in Marriott’s system with your name on it.

Why not in the busy weeks?

In spring break, the summer, the holidays and the weeks around them, the resorts run full and the owners book their 7 nights a year ahead. Those weeks are sold weekend to weekend, and there is no inventory to carve a short stay out of. The same goes for adding a night to the front or back of a peak week: if the villa is sold for the nights either side, there is nothing to add, and I would rather tell you that on the first email than after you have booked your flights.

How short is short?

Four nights is the usual minimum outside the busy weeks, when you ask far enough ahead. Now and then the calendar lines up for three (we have offered a 3-night July stay at Marriott’s BeachPlace Towers when a gap opened), but I would not plan a trip around that; plan around four and ask.

What does a short stay cost?

The same villa, priced by the night, and the quote covers the whole stay. Each resort page on travelscowt.com shows the nightly price it starts from, and your rate invoice shows the total for your dates with no booking fee, no service fee and no security deposit. The resort’s own front-desk charges, parking at some resorts, are the same whether you stay four nights or seven.

The pros and cons of a short stay on points

Pros:

  • Any check-in day outside the busy weeks, not just Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
  • Four nights instead of seven, in the same two-bedroom villa with the full kitchen, not a smaller unit.
  • Weekday stays are the easiest to find and the gentlest on the owner’s points.

Cons:

  • Not in the peak weeks, and not as an extra night tacked onto one.
  • Availability can change until the owner’s reservation is made, so a quick yes from you helps.
  • Non-refundable once booked, like every stay we arrange. Buy the insurance.

If you have dates in mind, pick the resort from the resorts page (the California and Florida pages group them by state), send them to your scowt with a day or two of flexibility either side, and we will tell you what the owners’ calendars allow. The rest of how a booking goes, from the rate invoice to the Marriott confirmation in your name, is in how renting works for guests.
